Here we go again...

Late Saturday night, two Union Pacific trains crashed in a head on collision near Quintana inside Loop 410. 4 workers, who were forced to jump from the train, suffered injuries. San Antonio is on edge, remembering the major derailment in May 2004 that set off a serious of 21 dangerous derailments, including a chlorine spill, that year that cost 6 lives and hundreds of injuries. Just like in 2004, the nearby residents were not notified of the crash nor assured that hazardous materials were not spilled. Broken bridges, buildings and sidewalks are another legacy of the mess Union Pacific refuses to clean up.

SWU demands the immediate protection of our lives, our families and our communities from the dangers assocaited with residing, attending school or workign near the Union Pacific railroad. SWU demands the City and County resolve to reroute all through traffic outside of San Antonio, install an adequate, efficient emergency alarm and evacuation system for neighborhoods and schools and a strict enforcement of all safety and environmental standards.

Justicia para Atenco

Wednesday morning, flower vendors from People in Defense of the Land Front (Frente de Pueblos en Defensa de la Tierra) of Atenco occupying a space in the Texcoco market were brutally repressed by state police. As they moved to reoccupy their space in the pre-dawn hours, the 40 flower vendors received back-up from the nearby municipality of Atenco. While defending their space in the market in Mexico state, a 14 year-old boy died from the impact of tear gas in the chest and more than forty people were arrested. Later federal police went into Atenco and began beating, arresting and disappearing people of the community. The people of Atenco won the struggle against an international airport on their land, part of the Plan Puebla Panama. Protests have shut down Mexico City. Students have occupied UNAM. Over 270 people have been arrested and there are reports of rape and beating. At least 60 people are missing.

Over 70,000 march in San Antonio on International Workers Day

Monday May 1st, 2006

The taquerias were all closed.

Hundreds united at Milam Park starting at noon for an all day celebration and rally for Worker & Migrant justice. There were murals, music, street theatre and letter writing.

Leading with red flags, tens of thousands took to the streets. The energy bounced off the high rise hotels. Waves of chanting filled dowtown. Looking into the crowd, the image was of families marching together. Parents, kids, grandparents, babies. Marchers went to the office of Senator John Cornyn to protest his racist views and taped demands to his office windows.

The crowd was greeted with music and speakers as the mile-plus long lines of people quickly overtook Travis Park.

Around the Nation:
Tens of Millions take to the street, businesses close and workers leave their job in over 200 cities.

Across the World:
Thousands of marches were held to recognize international workers day. In Mexico, people boycotted US corporate stores and products and didn't cross the border.
